Holbox is the ultimate dream island and was definitely the best way to end our amazing trip around the Yucatan peninsula. Located at the north of the peninsula, the island is only about 42 km long and 1.5km wide. We drove to the town of Chiquila, left our car there and took a ferry to reach this beautiful island. Cars are not allowed on the island!
A peaceful hippie atmosphere reigns on the island and there are not many tourists. White sand, crystal clear water in different beautiful tones, hammocks directly in the water… It is the best place to forget about it all.
1. Lazy days on the beach
Of course, most of our time was lazily spent on the beach. I had never seen such a beautiful beach and what was incredible was that we had it just to ourselves ! This island is a little gem. What was even more incredible was that the prices were not ridiculeously expensive like we could have expected.
What could be better than spending your afternoon in a hammock directly in the sea… There were two hammocks like this one side by side….
Bellow is the place where the river joins the sea. The different colors were amazingly beautiful. Once again I took dozens if pictures…
2. The tiny little village
There were a few restaurants, a few little stores, a few ATM machines that we always out of service during our stay, and nothing…
A few tips if you are going to Holbox:
Bring enough cash because there a few ATM machines on the islands and they were all out of service when we were there.
Rent a little golf car to explore the riches of Holbox. At one tip of the island, you will discover a beautiful river that ends in the ocean. The colors are beautiful!
Take a flash light with you. There are no street lamps so you will need one at night to walk from your hotel to the little town to have diner.
More than ever, don’t forget your repellent and sun block…

Thank you for sharing this adventure. I would love to plan something similar, myself. How many days did your entire trip last? Did you rent a car? Did you just wing it on the places to stay? About how much was this entire thing? I have so many questions!!!! Your pictures are gorgeous. I know this is not a brand new post, so I am hoping that it’s still active and you will reply. Feel free to contact me directly by my email if you so wish. Darn…I’m jealous.
